Holding Hands in Diversity

Writer's picture: Shauna Dever JonesShauna Dever Jones

As I sit down to write this, I have every intention to pour out what my heart narrates. Honestly, I am hesitant to publish because this is a subject that will bring out sentiments that may or may not be agreed-upon. I am okay with that and these are my thoughts. I feel it is imperative for us to have conversations, to know we will not always agree but to continue to hold respect for one another.

I consider myself a humanitarian. I make myself useful and give in my art form. I have even founded a dance program for people who have disabilities in our community and I am a public school teacher. It is natural for me to fight for equality and diversity. I have traveled, lived in many different places and have met many wonderful people along the way. People of all walks of life. What I have learned is that everyone is different, has unique lifestyle choices, religious views and cultures. That, my friends is so beautiful! I am saying this today today.....Love loud......love is love!

As a school teacher, I adore and love my students. I am lucky enough to have had some of my students for four years. I know them, their families and what they have been through. I have seen my students grow into beautiful human beings and find themselves in many different ways. I have so much respect and admiration for that. Students have shown acceptance with one another and thrive on diversity. They do not discriminate and know that what is one’s preference it’s not going to be another’s. They do not live in fear but yet lift one another up. This pandemic has given our young generation a new perspective. Life is good, life isn’t always good, life is beautiful, life is short and let’s celebrate everyone in diversity. Teaching our children love and that diversity is beauty begins in the home. Personally, I have no fear in teaching my boys that everyone is made differently. They are going to be who they are going to be and I love them so so so very much!

It is just and it is right for every human being to live and have equal rights. It is just and right to not be discriminated against. Others choices may not be your choice, others lifestyles may not be your lifestyle. It is not your choice, it is theirs. Everyone deserves acceptance as you want for yourself.

I see you, younger generation! You have the vision and you live by example. You are doing it, you are accepting, you are loving loud and I stand with you!
